Collision Repair Estimates
Walking into a body shop without knowing how to read a repair estimate can be difficult. We want you to know exactly what is involved in the repair process, so we take the time to review the common elements of repair estimates to help you understand how the repairs will take place.
Body Work vs Paint Work
First, let’s define not only the difference between body and paint work but where one stops and the other begins. Body work ends at the point where you pick up your sander or sandpaper to begin feathering the paint for primer. In other words, you’ve removed the dents, filled the surface irregularities with bondo or whatever the product in use is and are just about ready to apply primer. But first we must remove the scratches and also make the step from the metal to the surface of the old paint a smooth transition (feathering ), this is where the body work stops and the paint work begins. With this in mind, you’ll know where to look on this site for information, tools, and materials that can help you with the area of your project that needs attention at this time.
collision repair Painting
To prepare for a factory-style paint finish – and to duplicate the steps originally taken by the manufacturer – we first remove all exterior parts that are not to be painted, such as trim, moldings, head lamps, tail lamps, and name plates. This exposes the maximum amount of surface area on your vehicle, ensuring that every edge, seam, and joint gets painted properly.
The repaired areas are then primed and block-sanded, and adjoining areas are sanded as well to provide a completely smooth, level, seamless surface for the paint to be applied to. Finally, the vehicle is masked and completely covered to protect against “over-spray” as it enters the paint booth for refinishing.
